Trustees
About
Trustees in the Catholic Church are unique to Connecticut and have an interesting legacy. It is state law that a Catholic parish have two lay people, not employed by the parish, be members of the parish corporation (which means they are needed to sign off an any major changes to the parish).
This was originally an “anti-Catholic” law designed to undermine the independence of the Church and to make parishes become governed more like Congregational Churches.
In the end, however, the effect has neither undermined church independence nor has it made us more like Congregational Churches. Rather, trustees are a valued position to advise the pastor, freely attend meetings of the finance and parish councils, and review the parish’s annual reports.
